Upon his retirement in 1998, Dr. Kuiper completed twelve years of distinguished service at UNT, having served nine of those twelve years as the Chair of the Department of Radio, Television and Film. Dr. Kuiper's distinguished career has also included substantial service to the University Film and Video Association, one of the discipline's major organizations for the support of scholarly and creative work. He has been active in that prestigious national organization for many years, having served as its president and as president of the UFVA Foundation. In 1998, UFVA recognized that service by honoring him with a lifetime membership.
Dr. Kuiper's achievements at UNT were preceded by an impressive list of professional and scholarly accomplishments in other venues. After a brief career as a professional still and motion picture photographer, he entered the University of Iowa where, in 1960, he received his PhD. He then embarked on an academic career that combined teaching with work as a film archivist. It was in this latter capacity that he served for many years as the Head of the Motion Pictures Section of The Library of Congress followed by an assignment as the Director of the International Museum of Photography/George Eastman House.

Articles on film history, theory and criticism, film copyright, media pedagogy, film music in Cinema Journal, Journal of Film and Video, Quarterly of the Library of Congress, Performing Arts Resources, Variety. Co-editor and author of Handbook for Film Archives (Brussels, 1991). Lecturer for U.S. Department of State (USIA). President, University Film and Video Foundation. Former cameraman for NBC-TV, "Wild Kingdom (ZOOPARADE)" in Africa. Has managed large photo and film collection archives at The Library of Congress and at The International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House.
